The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 27 - 30, 1963 Daylite Savings Time

Saturday, April 27, 1963MIKE CALLED. NO-NO TRANSFER.

Mike called at 9:30 tonight. He can’t get his transfer. He was so down in the dumps about it. He didn’t say much. He was sick, home sick. Betty, Doreen and Larry made a chicken coop. Kids and I to town in p.m. Kids to movie in evening.

Sunday, April 28, 1963

A nice sunny day. A very nice clear day, first one we have seen since about two or three weeks. All sunny and bright all day. We got ready as soon as we could after breakfast and took Doreen and Larry home. Betty, Carmen and me. We took a little extra ride down through Gloucester and Gray, Poland. Got home, got supper. Betty got baby to bed, got the chickens in. Aunt Ava called. Kennie, Dot, Dolores here in p.m. Billie gone smelting. Got the chicks OUT. Alice going to see what can be done about Mike.

Monday, April 29, 1963 Old Daylite Time

Another very nice day. I washed and washed and washed. Today we began that old daylight time I hate it. I have been behind all day. I did a big wash. Mama over to Norway with Blanche and Lori. A big relief for a too short time. I done a lot. Fern and Lloyd called. Betty got ready, went to Dr. Richards about Mike and his transfer. Said he should get it and he would. That makes us feel much better. Betty took Carmen to town. Clothes dried good.

Tuesday, April 30, 1963

Rained all day. I ironed, churned, done the housework. Blanche and Lori called. I made soup. Betty very sick all day. Bill and I to town and got her some penicillin. Linda and I called after supper to see Betty. I took care of Carmen. She was cunning all day.
