The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 29 - April 1, 1963



Friday, March 29, 1963 Betty got a letter from Mike

Another nice day. We have had a wonderful week and the snow has settled about 2 feet. Real spring. Well, I didn’t get anything done today as I planned. In a.m. Blanche and I to Norway. In p.m. Betty, Carmen and I down to Dawn’s. Came home, had supper. To town. Betty feels good today. Letter from Daddy Mike today, a nice one.



Saturday, March 30, 1963

Cloudy, not quite as warm. I done up the work, cooked. Billie, Bill and Betty over to Twitchell’s in Oxford. Later in p.m. Betty and I took Carmen to the doctors for checkup. She is in fine condition, perfect the doctor said. Fern up here for supper tonight. First time for three weeks.



Sunday, March 31, 1963

Another very nice day. Carmen got me up early. Churned, had dinner early. Billie away in PM. Betty to town. Bill out riding off and on. Bill and I down town in late p.m. Art Ward and girls called. Kennie, Dot, Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. I wrote to Es.



Monday, April 1, 1963

Another one of those very nice days, high temperature. Snow is going fast. I washed. Betty’s records came. Mike sent the pictures back today. Betty’s check came today. Kay Fleck and Julie Conant called in p.m. Betty wrote to Mike tonight.
