The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 29 - February 1, 1963



Tuesday, January 29, 1963

A nice day. I ironed. Dorothea and Jeff to town to babysit for Ruby while Ruby is up to the hospital to see her little boy. Aunt Ava over here in p.m. I ironed. Betty and Mike set out to the kitchen talking. They have so much to talk about. Problems Problems Problems.



Wednesday, January 30, 1963

Windy and cold. Betty and Mike happy. Dorothea and Jeff down to Barb’s. Joy and Buddy called. David Nevers here in p.m. and to supper. Mike is not going to get the extension on his leave. He is trying for transfer.



Thursday, January 31, 1963

A nice day. Betty and Mike making plans to get things done. They got the car and I went to Auburn and Lewiston with them. They got the necessary papers. Betty in pain after she got home. Dorothea, Jeff came home from Barb’s. Jeff looks quite pale. Joy, Buddy, girls and Fern and Lloyd called.



Friday, February 1, 1963

A nice clear day, not too cold. Dorothea felt sick all day and in bed. Her electric razor came. Betty and Mike downtown in p.m. Betty made cookies. Later in p.m. Betty and Mike took a few snaps and went for a short ride. To the movies in the evening. Jeff better today. Steve (Holly’s husband) came home today.
