The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 12 - 15, 1963



Tuesday, February 12, 1963

Cloudy and snowed. Betty still aches in her hind end. Baby has kind of a upset stomach today. Dorothea to town with Fern and Lloyd. In p.m. she went up to Blanche and Joys. Bill home for supper and back to work. Bob Allen called. Dorothea and Jeff walked up and called at Delores’s and then on up to Blanche’s. Then they walked home.



Wednesday, February 13, 1963

Cold. Dorothea and Jeff up early, downtown with Fern and Lloyd, then came home and went down to visit them. I did up my work. Cooked a little. Bob Allen called and got her bags and boxes to ship home for her. Fern up for supper and evening. Betty had a nice letter from Mike.



Thursday, February 14, 1963

A nice day, done the ironing. Barbra came up to say goodbye to Dorothea and Jeff. Dorothea had a letter and check from Dennis. Betty got a Valentine from Mike. Baby Carmen very good. Betty about the same.



Friday, February 15, 1963

Cold, zero. A nice day, it got cold. We didn’t get much done. Joy, Blanche and girls came over. It was just plain bedlam all day. Three little jumping bugs. Dorothea thinking about going all day tomorrow. We took a lot of pictures. Lorraine, Dot and Wanda Jean came up in late p.m., we took more pictures. Dorothea and I to town after supper. Betty not too good. Jeff and Dorothea are excited about packing etc. Fern, Lloyd called. We washed.
