The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 21 - 24, 1963 Billie's 32nd Birthday



Thursday, March 21, 1963

A very nice day, windy. I got my housework done up, went to Portland with Blanche, Joy and kids. Joy went to the Greyhound bus terminal and took off for South Carolina to meet Buddy. Bill and I called at Ferns in evening.



Friday March 22, 1963 William Meldrum Crook Jr 32 years old today

Betty got a nice encouraging letter from Mike today. At last he is making progress on the transfer. I do hope it will go through. I made a cake for Billie. We had a chicken dinner. A nice sunny day, snow settled some. Betty and I to town in evening. Betty and Blanche to Portland. Betty bought some chickens.



Saturday, March 23, 1963

Another nice day. Snow settled a little more. I cleaned up the house, I cooked. Blanche and girls called. In p.m. Bill, Betty and I to town. Betty sent Mike a nice long letter and the snaps of their daughter. Betty and Carmen and I called at Thelma’s (Mike’s grandmother) in PM. Fern sick again today. Betty down to Berry’s in evening.



Sunday, March 24, 1963 Got Calves

A nice mild day. Billie went with Lawrence out buying and selling cattle. Billie bought three new Durham heifer calves. Kennie, Dot, Dawn and George called. I got my letter written to Esther. Bill down helping Gordon shovel snow from Jean’s barn roof.
