The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 24 - 28, 1963



Sunday, February 24, 1963

Snowed all day. Bill called out to plow about 1:30. Billie down to Farmington NH with Lawrence Boynton. Kenny and Dot called. Gloria Arsenault Walker and her husband and baby girl called, also (?) Linsia, her sister. Blanche, Joy and girls called. Not so cold.



Monday, February 25, 1963

Very cold this morning. I did a big wash. Betty cleaned up the chambers. Then we rearrange the furniture in the living room. Kennard called. Fern and Lloyd called. Betty got a letter from MIKE.



Tuesday, February 26, 1963

Not so cold this morning. I cooked, got the clothes in. Took care of Carmen, wrote to Esther. Betty didn’t get up till late. She had a headache. Joy, blanche and girls called. Kennard called. Billie and I over to Aunt Ava’s after supper. Betty up to Joys for a little while. Carmen slept all day.



Wednesday, February 27, 1963

18 below. I ironed. Cleaned windows. Joy called, Dolores and Mrs. Murphy. Betty done some cooking. She is still lame and has headache.



Thursday, February 28, 1963

20 below. I finished my cleaning. Joy came over, Betty went up there. Very cold this morning. Warmed up in the day. Betty has a headache.
