The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Wednesday, February 20, 1963

A very nice day after it got cleared off from the snowstorm. Snow is piled so high. Bill out all last night and came home at noon today. Betty still very sick, looks bad. I’m taking care of Carmen. Betty had a letter from Mike. I shoveled a little snow. Kennard called, Donna in evening.





Thursday, February 21, 1963 TRADED STEERS

Very squally in the early a.m., cleared in middle of a.m. sun came out, it began to get cold. Betty better today, but I took care of Carmen. Betty stayed upstairs all day. No one here today. Billie changed steers today. He also got money for his steer he sold. Betty got her license tonight.



Friday, February 22, 1963

12 below this morning. A nice day. On the cold side. Betty much better, she took care of Carmen today. Blanche, Joy and girls called. Betty to town to get the car. Bill and I to town after supper. Minnie went with us. Doreen and her boyfriend hitchhiked up from Auburn. They are staying here all night. They all went downtown after supper, down to her Grammie Briggs.



Saturday, February 23, 1963

Zero this morning. I cooked. Got ready and went to Auburn to take Doreen and Larry home. Alice loved her granddaughter. Fern up here for supper. Also Ann and Sally Berry. Carmen awake all day, she went to bed early. She is all sweet, just a doll. Kay Fleck and her new boyfriend, Lenny Lambert, came up in p.m. to visit Carmen Christie. Kay thinks baby is so sweet!!
