The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 9 - 12, 1963



Wednesday, January 9, 1963

A very nice springlike day. Just like March 35 to 40 above. Snow melts and has settled a lot. We cleaned up the whole house, wiped up the floors. Blanche here. In p.m. Barb and Nancy and little boy called. Betty did not get a letter from Mike. Worked from Mrs. Hansen tonight babysitting.



Thursday, January 10, 1963 35 to 40 Above

Another one of those nice mild days. Temperatures in the 40s. In forenoon I went to Norway with Aunt Ava. Dorothea went to Portland with Bob and Nancy.



Friday, January 11, 1963

40° above in PM. Real nice springlike weather. It clouded up in PM. At dark got cooler and began storming then snow began in early evening. Betty and I to town after supper. Took TV today. We cleaned up the house, made a cake. Bill called out at 11 PM. No letter from Mike. Got paid for milk tonight after two weeks.



Saturday, January 12, 1963

20° above. Snowed all day. Again we look like winter, plenty of snow. I had to work from Mrs. Hansen. Fern, Lloyd called today. Betty to Dr.’s today. She is in perfect order. Dr. told her she could have it any time.
