The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 27 - 30, 1962

Saturday, January 27, 1962

Nice in morning. Got very cold in late day and windy. Billie worked today. I got my work, cooking all done up early to watch John Glenn’s trip into space. No go. It got so cloudy in Cape Canaveral. Bill had to work tonight.

Sunday, January 28, 1962

Cold today. Bill worked on his car all day. I had fried chicken for dinner. Bob, Blanche, Kennie and Dot called. Bill had a bad aching tooth pulled this evening.

Monday, January 29, 1962

Very cold, 15 below. I washed, done some cooking. Kennard brought his iron down for me to use. I done some ironing in evening. Bill and I down to Gordon and Sally’s in evening. Bill didn’t get up very early, went to work about 8 o’clock.

Tuesday, January 30, 1962

15 to 19 below this morning. Storming. I went to dentist, Lloyd took me down. I had tooth pulled. It cleared off nice about 11:30 but awful cold. My other pictures came back today. I got them ready to send to Betty. Also sent some to Dorothea. Kennard called. Art called in evening. About 6-8 inches of snow came. I churned early this morning. Bill called out after supper.
