The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 16 - 19, 1962

Friday, February 16, 1962

A nice mild clear day. I cleaned up the house, got ready and went to Uncle Os’s funeral. Kennard and Delores went with us. A nice funeral. Had some pretty flowers. Clouded up in p.m. Dorothy Prescott stayed with Mama. In evening Bob and Blanche called. Bill and I to town. Billie didn’t go back to work. Billie put in a big week at the plant, got $130.

Oswald gone Forever. He has been a man of the times, believe me.

Saturday, February 17, 1962 Betty Louise Crook Boutilier 19

Betty 19 today. She was way out to Ohio at Esther and Cliff’s. Had a very nice birthday. First time she ever was away. I went to town with Fern and Lloyd. Got Bill’s excise tax paid. He sent for his license. Also Mike’s income tax statement.

Sunday, February 18, 1962

A nice day. I didn’t get up till 9:30. Done up regular work. I looked over some of the papers I got behind on. Blanche called and Art Ward and baby. In p.m. Kennie and Dot called and later Fern and Lloyd.

About 6:30 PM Betty called us from Ohio at Esther’s. It was so good to hear her voice after four weeks. She is so happy. She is going to Mike this week. He is back at Fort Lewis, Washington after a tour of Germany. He called Betty on Valentine’s Day at Esther’s. It cost them $14. She will leave by bus Wednesday at 1:15 from Cleveland for Tacoma Washington. Get there at noon Saturday. I’m so glad for them both.

Monday, February 19, 1962

Clouded up and snowed. It began to snow about noon. I washed. Kennard came for water. Got about 8 inches. LETTERS FROM DOROTHEA, BETTY AND ESTHER. Glad to hear from Dorothea. She don’t write very often. I wish she would. Betty does very well. She writes very nice letters. At last she is happy. I read a very nice letter from Mike she sent. Billie didn’t work tonight. Bill had to go back to work.
