The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 15 - 18, 1962

Thursday, March 15, 1962

A very nice day. 40 – 50 above. Windy but a March wind, warmer. Snow melted and run down the road. Mike’s income check came back today. Today I finished writing my diary over. Cleaned up my chambers. In evening Bill and I called the Ferns.

Friday, March 16, 1962

Another one of the nice days. I wrote a long letter to Betty and Mike. I sent the check to them. I cleaned up my downstairs. Washed windows, took a bath, got ready and to town with Bill in evening. Billie down to Ferns in evening. I got yellow pills for Bill today. He got his income tax refund back today. Billie got a turkey tonight.

Saturday, March 17, 1962 Pictures came of Wedding

Partly cloudy. Quite windy, but the snow settled. I cooked, washed kitchen floor. Today the wedding pictures came of the wedding from Thena. Very good. I went to town after Bill got home. Also over to Aunt Ava’s. Bill worked on TV. Billie worked at the plant all day. I got the turkey ready to cook tomorrow. Lloyd called, Blanche called. Bill down to Gordon’s and Sally’s.

Sunday, March 18, 1962

A nice sunny warm day. I got the work done up, cooked a turkey. Had a pre-birthday dinner for Billie. Had Fern and Lloyd here for supper. In PM Kennie and Dot, Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis here. We had turkey salad, asparagus, mashed potatoes, hot raised bread. Birthday cake and ice cream. I wrote to Esther.
