The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 24 - 26, 1962 Betty Reunites With Mike

Saturday, February 24, 1962 Betty got to Mike

Betty and Mike called. That call was well worth the price. And more than anyone can say. I was waiting and hoping for it to come. Betty got there at 11:30 AM Pacific time 2:30 E. S. T. She sounded so Happy. She had a most wonderful trip out. Mike was so glad to see her and she was him. I’m so glad for both of them. That is where they belong, is with each other. Bill called out at 5 AM. A very bad storm. Some wind and a lot of snow. Billie got me a wall can opener and a new oilcloth.

Sunday, February 25, 1962

10 below this morning. A nice day, so much snow. Bill had to work. We got up as usual. I done up the work. Weldon Brackett and baby called. Art and family called. I got dinner. Bill home about two. Kennie and Dot here for supper. Fern and Lloyd called. Bill put my new can opener up.

Monday, February 26, 1962

Cloudy. It began to snow about 8 o’clock. By 9:30 it was snowing real hard. Lloyd came up. Kennard called. I washed, got a letter from Esther. Bill had to work plowing tonight.
