The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 11 - 14, 1962

Sunday, March 11, 1962

50 – 55 above in PM. A beautiful day. Billie had to work all day. Kennie and Dot called. Bill went to sleep. Fern and Lloyd called in evening. I wrote to Es, Jean and Betty.

Monday, March 12, 1962

Cloudy all day. I washed, and got a lot of mail. Bill called out tonight. I went over to Aunt Ava’s in evening. A bad storm began tonight.

Tuesday, March 13, 1962 Big Wet Snow

When we got up this morning, we were snowbound. An awful bad storm. Bill didn’t come home at all. He came for breakfast about 830. I got his lunch up for him. Billie was an hour late. He had to shovel to get to the road and get the car out. Fern and Lloyd drove into the yard. She came to borrow some grain. Back ache. Bill to bed early. I ironed.

Wednesday, March 14, 1962 LETTER FROM BET AND MIKE

A very nice day. 50 to 60 above out in the sun on the thermometer. 40 above out there in shade in forenoon. I made a lemon pie, done my work. Got my two letters off. I scoured the separator all up today. It looked nice. Fern and Lloyd called, also Kennard. We got another one of those happy sounding letters from Betty today. I’m so glad she is so happy.
