The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

John Glenn Junior went up and into orbit and around the world three times. It was very nice. We had a good and complete coverage on NBC. Also CBS was good. Watched it all day. I took down the Christmas decorations and cleaned up the porch. Kennard called. I wrote a long letter to Dorothea and Dennis. It has been a nice day. Bill worked until 2 AM.

Today at 11 AM Betty left Esther and Cliff’s where she has been exactly one month to a day. She has had the most enjoyable time. Many many thanks to them for what they done for her. So much too. At 1:15 she left Cleveland bus terminal for Tacoma Washington to be with her husband, Mike Boutilier. She had to change in Chicago Illinois. She went all alone and never traveled before. I wrote to Dorothea, got a letter ready to go to Betty tomorrow. Art’s cow calved today. Bill had two teeth pulled today. Fern had one pulled. Fern and Lloyd had a new phone put in. Billie and I down to Ferns.

Zero this morning. Snowing. Bill was called about 5 o’clock. I have been tracing Betty’s westward trip all day. I cleaned up the chambers today. Kennard called. In evening Bill and I down to Gordon and Sally’s. About 8 inches of snow.

34° above. A very nice day, warm. Snow settled. I cleaned up the downstairs. In p.m. Delores called, also Pat Linscott and children. Been thinking of Betty all day. She must be getting into North Dakota. Hope the storm isn’t too bad where she is. To town after supper. In late evening, called at Ferns. Yes, she must be way in Montana tonight.
