The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 3 - 6, 1962

Thursday, May 3, 1962 A LETTER FROM BETTY

I sure was glad to get a letter from Betty. It was good to hear from her, knowing she is all right, but no place to live. What will she do. I’m so worried. If only I could get to her. Rain Rain Rain. I finished varnishing the kitchen. Also done buffet and china closet. Kennie and Dot called. In p.m. went to Herbert Allen’s funeral.

Partly cloudy and showers. LETTER FROM BETTY. She has her apartment. It was a nice long letter. It was such a relief to hear from her, that she is all right. I have worried so much about her. I worked getting the dining room ready to paint and paper. I cooked. In evening I went to town. Mike got home from base. It pleased Betty.

Saturday, May 5, 1962

Partly cloudy day. It did rain some. I finished painting the dining room, getting it ready for Bill to paper in PM. In PM I went to Portland with Sally and girls, Linda and Vicki. Bill papered the dining room. Billie did his fencing. Blanche here in p.m. Fern up here in evening. We called at Ferns after supper. Her house looks so nice.

Sunday, May 6, 1962

A very nice, bright and sunny sunrise this morning. About 930 clouded up and rained hard all day. Billie did odd jobs. Bill down to Gordon’s in a.m. Did odd jobs in PM. I got meals, done up the work, churned and settle the new dining room. It looks so nice. Kennie, Dot, Kennard, Art, Fern, Lloyd and Bobby called.
