The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 31 - February 3, 1962



Wednesday, January 31, 1962

20 below here this morning. A very cold week. Done up my work, got my letter and pictures off for Betty and Dorothea. Bill worked till about 10:30 tonight. I watched TV all evening. Billie watched TV too.




Thursday, February 1, 1962

20 below we got up. It dropped down to about 25 below. Very cold all day. 30 – 34 below downtown. Some of the guys where Billie worked down the line said it was 40 below about two this morning. In Indian Acres up in Maine it was 50 below. Our sink spout was frozen up and our cold water pipe also and broken. I went over to Aunt Ava’s and spent the day. Blanche came over here. Called at Ferns in evening. Got Betty and Esther’s letters today.

Friday, February 2, 1962

22 below this morning. Water frozen at barn. Bill’s car didn’t start. Cleaned up all the house. Washed all the floors. Get ready to go to town. Kennard called. I mailed Bill’s and Mama’s tax return. Art came up to see Bill and Billie, started Bill’s car.



Saturday, February 3, 1962

Warm, 20 above today. Some snow flurries. Bill had to work all day. I cooked and churned. Bill worked till late. Art and family called. Cloudy with snow flurries.
