The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 21 - 23, 1977

Wednesday, September 21, 1977 Winter Haven

Today we had been to Disneyland all day. Had breakfast at Clermont, lunch at Disneyland, supper at Haine’s City. Tonight we are at Cypress Gardens. Going there tomorrow. It has been very hot and humid. We saw the waxed presidents today. A show, America the beautiful. Rode a airplane in a show. Saw a very good animated Western music show and many many more. One thing was riding the boat through the jungle, animated animals etc. Just as real looking as could be.

Thursday, September 22, 1977 another hot day Al Inn, Lake City Florida

This is the hottest place I’ve ever been. We left the motel at Winter Haven, had breakfast, went to Cypress Gardens. Saw the plants, flowers etc. Then a very good water show. Then drove on over through to the West Coast crossing the bridge over Tampa Bay to St. Petersburg to the Gulf of Mexico. That was beautiful over there in that area. We came back from their and went to Esther’s place in Eustis. That is a very pretty place to. Came from there to Lake City at about 600 miles for the night. We are now working ourselves North. I’m glad to get out of this heat. I wouldn’t want this to be my home.

Friday, September 23, 1977 fair, quite hot

This morning we ate breakfast in Lake City, Florida. Lunch at Thomasville, Georgia. Drove on to Plains, Georgia, the home town of Pres. Carter and his brother Billie. We saw that famous gas station of Billie Carter’s. What a place. It sure is a old-time place. We rode around there. Then left and drove on to Atlanta and Chattanooga, Georgia then up as far as Manchester Tennessee tonight, where we had supper and stayed tonight. I have written cards. Bill listening to TV. David gets so tired driving and it is hard living in a car all day. The way we’re going will be home by Wednesday.
