The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 29 - October 2, 1977

Thursday, September 29, 1977 SEEMS GOOD TO BE HOME

A cloudy day, some sun, no rain. I did a big wash, they dried good. I done my hair also today. Well, this is the first all day home and I love it. I’m no traveler, never was or never will be. I went down to Betty’s a little while this PM. Susan called in PM.

Very nice sunny day, but it got cloudy and rained late in PM. I did some more wash. I went to town early and shopped. Then came home, got lunch, did a huge ironing. Cleaned Heidi’s bed all up today. Went down to Betty’s in PM a little while and helped her also Dawn was there. They worked on the animals and Betty finished cleaning up her house.

This is been a cloudy heavy rainy day. I made a cake, rolls, baked beans, got some papers read. Milan and Betty didn’t come, they called, said they worked going up to Vermont first, be here Monday. Dorothea and David came and got their chickens or pullets, they were here for supper. Betty, Dawn and Carmen defrosted the cats today, wormed, eyes, ears and shots. A very miserable looking day. Walt up this a.m.

Sunday, October 2, 1977 HENS

Sun out when we got up. But it was some cloudy during the day. Billie killed the old hens and we got them in the deep-freeze. He cleaned the hen house and got the pullets in. Bill and I to see Lloyd in PM. His mind was okay today. He is weak.
