The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 16 -18, 1977 Nanny and Poppa Road Trip With David and Dorothea

Friday, September 16, 1977

Up at 5 AM. We left to go to Westbrook at 6:30. At 7:30 we left Dorothea and David’s house. It was kind of cloudy. We ate sandwiches at Warehouse Point at about 11 AM. It had been getting more cloudy, and when we ate it was raining. We drove on to Broadbrook PO and called Milan. He came and we followed him out to his house. They have a very nice little home and Milan is very proud. We left there about 12:30. Went out through Hartford and then headed south. We got rain in New York and more New Jersey. Then it let up until we got to nearly Maryland and it poured. After a few hours it let up. Today we crossed the Hudson River, also the Delaware River. We ate at Cherry Hill Inn for supper. At night we stayed in motel (Colonial Motor) at Delaware.

Cloudy when we got up. It cleared, we drove on to Washington DC after a good breakfast at a bus stop in Baltimore. We got to Washington DC at 9:30 AM. We saw it all on a tour bus then left there about 2 PM, ate lunch at Gino’s then in PM we visited the old town of Fredericksburg, the old historical places. George Washington’s mother’s home and many other places. Ate supper in Petersburg and drove on to Weldon, North Carolina where we are for the night. I don’t like it after it gets dark.

Up and left at about 7 AM from Weldon North Carolina. Got to St. Augustine Florida about 8 PM. It has been hot. We stopped and got some things at gift shops today etc. David gets tired driving. We are enjoying all we are seeing. Very interesting. Things look different down here than at home. I wouldn’t want to live here. South of the Border Gift Shop.
