The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 30 - August 1, 1977

Saturday, July 30, 1977 warmer, cloudy, a small rain shower

A partly cloudy day. I done my work, and made a cake. Fern came up, she was here all day and for supper. We got a small rain shower. Billie went with Lawrence. Betty and Walt didn’t get back until late tonight from the trip.

Sunday, July 31, 1977

A nice sunny day. I didn’t get up till 9:30. I was late getting the work done. I did a wash. In PM I went over to Dawn’s place and the new shelter farm. Came home, got the clothes in. Got hamburgers and hotdogs, ate out. We liked the new grill. Billie got corn and cukes. Went to the German Band concert in Naples.

Monday, August 1, 1977 foggy, got cow and calf, HOT AND HUMID

It was foggy when I got up. Concert was very good. I went to it with Demings and Yates last night. I done my ironing early. Carmen up for breakfast. Billie got ready, went with Lawrence to an auction. We had thundershowers and rain today. Dorothea and David’s niece, husband and baby called. I went down and called on Fern and Esther. When Billie came home tonight he had a half Hereford and Holstein cow and calf.
