The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

I did a big ironing early. I rushed around and got Billie’s room clean today, went to Norway in PM to get the drapes for the living room. Didn’t find anything. Saw Lloyd, he is just the same. Betty took Fern and I up to Paris Hill. A beautiful place. Bill worked at Barnaby’s.

 

 

 

Wednesday, October 12, 1977

 

I cleaned the rest of my bedroom and the blue bathroom and other jobs. Billie helped Walt today. Bill worked at camp Barnaby’s. I went to the bank at noon.

 

 

 

Thursday, October 13, 1977

 

A quite nice day. Got my work done up and Billie and I went down to Dorothea’s. She took us in to Portland to the shopping center to get curtains etc. We couldn’t get anything until we got out to Kings in Falmouth. There I got living room curtains etc. Billie went with us, he don’t like shopping now I tell you. I didn’t get any cleaning done today. Dorothea got her pictures back.

 

 

 

Friday, October 14, 1977 KIM’S FIRST DANCE

 

Tonight Kimmy attended her first dance. A junior high school which was Kimmy’s first was held at Lake Region High School. She got quite nervous. But she enjoyed it and danced a lot and had a good time. Today I got my living room done. Went to town. Bill worked. It has been cloudy all day and rained in PM.
