The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A nice day, sunny and very mild. I done up my work, got ready and went down to Betty’s. We got ready and went up to Shaw’s. Mabel Nevers went with us. Carmen went to the Lake Region homecoming bonfire rally. She is enjoying all her high school activities. Kimmy came up here this evening and is staying all night. Bill put $200 into the checking account. The or one petitions came out in the B news today.

A beautiful day. I done regular work, made bread, washed floors etc. Busy all day, and late PM Fern and Dorothea came. Dorothea had stayed at Fern’s last night and given Fern a permanent. It looked very nice. Fern stayed here for supper. Walt working on his roof. Billie went with Lawrence. Carmen to the LRHS parade, in PM she went to the game, in evening to the dance.

A cloudy dreary day, some light rain showers. I done my work up. Susan came up for a little while. Then I defrosted the refrigerator. Billie and Bill worked on the doors that go in the hen house. Carmen is bushed today, has a very bad case of laryngitis.

Monday, November 7, 1977 cloudy

It has been quite a cloudy day but there was a little Northwest wind and I washed. Hung my clothes out, they dried all right. Bill sanding the living room floor at Betty’s. Billie went out looking for a job. He heard some things about the current stories of the town manager, Ervin, Dominic Cardosi, Bell and Hamill. Town manager is Ervin Linscott. They are circulating petitions to remove Hamill, Linscott, and Bell from their jobs. I worked down to Betty’s today. Carmen to school today. Still hoarse.
