The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

I baked beans, made rolls. It was a pretty good day except on the cold side. Walt, Kim and Zak got home about 3 PM from Walt’s sisters. Carmen out babysitting with Zenya at Zenya’s cousin Marlene. Kim went skating up to the corner than stayed here tonight. We sat up and watch the New Year in. Billie got the tractor shoveled out and into the garage. Nola called today. She is a wonderful person.

Aunt Betty and Uncle Milan with Grandkids - Jason and Regina and Jim Knick while in CA in June.

This has been quite a year, for the first two months of this year it was very cold, windy and bad storms. The temperatures were down to zero and below for most of January and February. The road conditions were awful.

Lloyd was moved from NCM hospital to Portland. No good results. Then move back to NCM hospital. Then in the spring of this year he was moved to Andrews Nursing Home in South Paris. This past winter Bill and Ilan done a lot of ice fishing. Billie to the hospital. Has sugar diabetes. He is to lose weight which he did by going on a diet.

Carmen in the hospital for back problems.

Chet was quite well first part of the year, in April he got sick and went to NCM hospital. Later taken to the MM Center in Portland where his leg was amputated, from then on he began to go down hill. Got weak and failed rapidly. On May 15 he died. We have missed caring for him. He had a new will made out and left Billie everything except what he left Lil’s sister. $50,000 after all expenses of Chet’s were paid. Billie got Chet’s tractor and many things such as tools, clothes and other valuable items. Billie gave me $1000, paid Bill what he owed him and $500, rest of the family $100 each plus Walt the $1000 Walt loaned him to buy the first tractor.

Fern fell and broke her wrist. Esther and Cliff moved in and helped her and stayed with her all summer. Walt bought a new car, VW Rabbit.

The New Hope Animal Shelter organized and started this year. Bake sale, fairs, suppers etc. lawn sales were held.

Joy and family here for the summer. Before they left for Bermuda they had trouble with Pat. She left and Joy came into total possession of her father’s property. She paid Pat $5000 for a settlement.

Dorothea and David had a nice year after their second marriage. Jeff in Michigan most of the summer. No progress. Came home to find work. I wish him the very best of luck.

Bill had a good summer. Kim in the NCM hospital for pneumonia.

Dawn moved up to Joy’s in the fall for the winter. Betty, Walt and Dawn bought the Bob Smart land across from Ilan’s. That is where the animal shelter will be.

Early this fall David, Dorothea invited Bill and I on a trip to Florida. We went, it was a very nice interesting trip. We are very grateful for them for taking us. Never expected to go there in my life. I have been around a lot in my days.

This fall Walt made improvements in their home. It looks nice. Our houses was painted, all rooms except kitchen.

Carmen began high school and is doing very well. Also Kim began junior high, she is doing very well. A big change in Zak for the better.

Bill and Billie built a new storage shed this fall. Billie changed cows. Had nice Thanksgiving and Christmas. Dorothea and Dave have started an addition to their place.

The end.
