The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 21 - 24, 1977 Thanksgiving

Monday, November 21, 1977

It was a rainy cloudy very dark day. I got my work done up early so to go down to Betty’s. We got her upstairs all done. Her bacons and hams came back today. She wrapped them. Billie down to Westbrook, called at Dorothea and David’s. Their house is a mess because Jeff had a load of furniture come from Michigan. Then Billie looked for a job over in Oxford and called to see Lloyd. He isn’t too good.

Fair today, on the cool side. I got up early, washed, defrosted the refrigerator. Went down to stay with Zak till schoolbus came. Betty and Kim had a dentist appointment. They did some Christmas shopping. I came home, made my dark bread, the salad, done up my work. Down to Betty’s about noon. I washed windows, curtains, cleaned paint. Got home kind of late. I had a nice roast cooked. Cooked potatoes, made biscuits and a mince pie. After supper we called at Fern’s, Betty, Susan and I. Then we took Dawn’s milk to her. Fern over to see Lloyd. He was very good. Bill worked at Betty’s.

A nice day. I have been busy as a mouse all day. Done regular work, went to town, cooked, made preparations for tomorrow. Kim came up to stay all night. Bill and Billie out riding around, doing odds and end things.

Fern was here and the Hortons. Snow on the ground this morning. It melted before noon.
