The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Monday, December 19, 1977

 

Partly cloudy in a.m., in PM it got real cloudy. Bill and I to Norway in a.m., in PM I went to town with Betty and Dawn. Late in PM Dorothea came. She was going to Norway so she took Fern, Dot and I over to see Lloyd. He is just the same. We came home, she stayed for supper. Betty and Kim came up. Carmen babysitting. Dorothea went down to Betty’s and watched a show with them. Jeff is on his way home.

 

 

 

Tuesday, December 20, 1977 Monica’s birthday

 

Another cloudy dreary day. I done my work, ironed, done my hair, washed. Cooked a boiled dinner and made fudge. Bill didn’t do much, went to the dump and did a few errands for Fern. Monica had a birthday party. She is six years. Billie went down to Lloyd Trueworthy’s after supper.

 

 

 

Wednesday, December 21, 1977 MISERABLE DAY, HAIR SET

 

A dark cloudy snowy day, late in PM it came in heavy rain. I made rest of fudge. Got ready, went down to Barbara’s, got my hair set. Came home and after school Kim came and made her Christmas cookies. They were delicious. Came out very good. Billie went with Wes after cattle after supper.

Thursday, December 22, 1977

 

At last a quite nice day, it was sunny and mild. I got up, got my work done and went down to Betty’s. We made cornballs. She made her fudge. Bill did a lot of plowing down there.
