The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 13 - 16, 1978

Friday, January 13, 1978 Hair Set

 

It has been a cloudy day. I done my work, went to town with Susan and Delores. Then in PM I went down to Barbara’s and got my hair set. I did a dite of ironing. Wrote to Esther. Carmen up for supper. I had smoked finnan haddie which she likes very much. Bill didn’t go fishing.

 

 

 

Saturday, January 14, 1978 A BAD BAD DAY

 

It has been a very bad snowy windy and rainy day. A lot of snow came during the night and the wind blowed so hard. Bill plowed all forenoon. I done regular work, made bread, washed floors, changed beds etc. Billie shoveled snow all day.

 

 

 

Sunday, January 15, 1978

 

It has been cloudy all day. It snowed a dite but a few rain showers. I done my work and watch the memorial service of Hubert Humphrey’s in Washington DC. It was very nice. Dorothea and Dave called today. Then Betty and Walt came. To file Billie’s income tax

 

 

 

Monday, January 16, 1978

 

A beautiful day, nice and sunny except quite cold, near zero. I did a big wash, cooked a roast pork, to Andrews Nursing Home in South Paris with Fern and Susan. Lloyd the same. Ilan and Bill did not go fishing today.
