The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 9 -12, 1978

Monday, January 9, 1978 NO SCHOOL

A very bad day, rained, wind blowed, icy, snow, it was very mild. There wasn’t any school. Carmen and Kim came up. I made some chocolate chip and molasses cookies. There has been a lot of damage along Maine seacoast. Homes were blown down, seawalls washed out because of the high tides and very heavy winds. Glass was blown over the streets from windows and buildings in some parts of Portland down near the wharfs. A bad storm. Bill worked on the boat some more.

Tuesday, January 10, 1978 COLD

It has been some cloudiness, a dite of sun and a few snow flurries. It has been very cold and windy. I did a dite of wash. Cooked a chicken dinner. Made a pudding. A real bitter cold day.

A nice sunny day, but still very cold. Bill gone fishing. I did rest of the wash. They dried out good. Betty called. My pencils came from Sears and Roebuck’s. Also my pads I sent for.

Thursday, January 12, 1978 A beautiful day

I done my work up. Went down to Betty’s a few minutes. Came home and did a small wash. Bill up fishing. Came home early, check the water at Betty’s at the barn. It is frozen under the ground.
