The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A beautiful day. I done up the regular work, went to town early. Susan took Delores and me down. Came home, washed. Washed all the windows and did my ironing very early. I been very busy all day. Tonight we saw a very mysterious light in the sky.

 

Not what Nanny saw but my UFO (it was the moon!)

 

 

 

 

Saturday, February 11, 1978

 

A beautiful day. I done regular work, changed the beds, made bread. Made a pie with sugar substitute, washed floors, dusted. Billie got sawdust in, shoveled etc. Bill up to Sweden with Ilan. Betty brought Zak up in PM. She had to go away. This is a real nice day. Lots of snow around.

A beautiful day. I got my work done up. Changed the beds. In PM David and Dorothea came up and brought up their new truck. It is a very nice good-looking and clean truck. It is a four-wheel-drive. He has a new plow. Betty, Zak and Carmen called also. Bill and Ilan went fishing today.

 

 

 

Monday, February 13, 1978

 

Another very nice day. Just a beautiful and clear sunny and warm. I did my washing, clothes dried very good. I washed the bedroom windows. Made escalloped potatoes.
