The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 23 - 25, 1977 Christmas!

Friday, December 23, 1977

Got my work done early, got ready and went down to Betty’s. I helped her clean her house. It was an all day job, then we went to town shopping for Christmas dinner etc. It has been a long hard day.

A very nice day. I was very busy all day and Kim came up. We made bread, pies and cookies. Cleaned up the house. Rushed around all day doing all the last-minute things. Got our snacks for evening ready. Down to Fern’s while she opened her gifts. Then she, Ragers, Hortons and Demings all came up here. The Thomases, Adair and Paula were here. We was so glad to see Jeff. It was my best Christmas present. I love him and do wish him the best. We Crooks opened our gifts, many many nice and useful gifts. A good time.

Sunday, December 25, 1977 RAIN

Christmas day was a rainy, foggy one. Up at about six, got ready as quick as possible, down to Betty’s. We got her turkey into the oven and roast pork. Rest of the meal the same, turnip, onions, shell beans, sweet potato, mashed white potato, celery, salad, hot rolls, dark bread, lemon sponge, custard and pumpkin pie. Yule log roll, cookies etc. Thomases, Yates, Crooks. The Horton’s all got many nice gifts. Billie, Susan and children called in PM, also Dawn. We had supper then called at Sue and Dawn’s. Then Betty and we cleaned up from it all. Carmen got new record player, Kim got nice new sewing table, Zak got BB gun.
