The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 7 -9, 1978 Bad Blizzard

Tuesday, February 7, 1978 NO SCHOOL, BAD BLIZZARD

Blizard like weather today. The bad storm hit here full force last night. No school, some highways closed. Many places aren’t opening for work today. Boston, New York City, Connecticut towns and cities all are very hard-hit by the storm. Main highways in Massachusetts are closed. Airports. It was very bad down along the coast. Many homes, summer cottages destroyed. Some places washed out to sea. The Old Orchard Pier destroyed. It was awful, many lives lost during this storm. Walt didn’t go to work.

Wednesday, February 8, 1978 NO SCHOOL

A beautiful day but a lot of snow around. No school. It was sunny, not too cold. I did a small wash. Dried good. Bill finished plowing and shoveling. Betty and kids called. This has been a very bad storm all over New England.

 Thursday, February 9, 1978

It cleared off nice after the bad blizzard. Kids back-to-school. I did a wash. Clothes dried very good. I was down to Betty’s. I helped her to do her washing. She got it most all caught up. Kids were glad to get back to school today.
