The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 17 - 20, 1977

Cloudy and raining today. I worked at Betty’s in a.m. We got a lot of settling done and living room. Fern was there and she helped too, if she hadn’t we wouldn’t get so much done. I went to town in PM. Delores, Susan and I. Then I went back down and did a couple more jobs. Kim was upset tonight because her parents went to a New Hope Farm meeting instead of to her school open house.

Partly cloudy. I done my work up early. Betty came up, she ate breakfast here then we went down to her house to do some more cleaning etc. We got all windows washed on the outside, washed and scrape paint on the living room windows on the inside. Betty painted around the two new windows and the door in living room. She had customers and phone calls all forenoon. I washed and done other things while she did that.

A cold day. We had some snow flurries in a.m. and rain showers. Zak watched programs. I made cake and bread. Kim came up to stay tonight, she don’t feel very good, she has a cold. Carmen called, showed us her card, it is very good. Billie gone with Lawrence all day.

A beautiful day. I done my work. In PM I went down to Betty’s. We washed all storm windows and other windows. Cleaned her back porch. It was late when I got home.
