The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Hot. Today Billie went to the Dr. in Portland. His veins are very bad. He has got to go back tomorrow and be admitted for a operation. Betty took him down and Zak. He will have to go to Mercy Hospital. He is upset some about these problems. He will have to give up the cow. He hates that. David got some hay in today. Billie called on him, also at Fern’s. Betty did the shopping today. I also went down after the checks came. Bill to the Dr., he is doing quite fine, no more bleeding.

Wednesday, July 4, 1984 BILLIE TO MERCY HOSPITAL

A quite nice day. It was cloudy with thunderclouds. We got the work done up and went up to camp at Twin Oaks in Sweden. Had a cookout for the fourth. It was a nice day for cookouts, parades, haying and fireworks. In PM got some scattered showers. It didn’t hurt the hay. David has now got 200 or so bales. We came home from the dinner. Fern, Esther, Susan and children here. Billie got ready and when Carmen left he went with her to the Mercy Hospital for operation. He has a serious problem with the veins. He hated to go. Carmen up last night for overnight. Kim came this PM for a little while.
