The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 2 - 4, 1984 First Day of School

Sunday, September 2, 1984 HORSES IN FIELD, Carmen to work at Fern’s

A quite nice day, on the coolish and windy side. Today they finished the fencing and got the horses in. Carmen and Kim helped with the fencing and Betty and Walt. Zak up to Dorothea’s all day helping her. Billie got tired. Tonight Fern has a new hired hand, Carmen. She got home from Doreen’s early this morning. She had a good time.

Monday, September 3, 1984

A mixed day of weather, it rained early in a.m. Cleared some in PM. At suppertime the sun came out bright. Betty and Walt up to camp for the day. Kim came up early this morning. Dorothea still sold more things today. I watched TV shows, did the washing and ironing. This is Carmen’s first day of work at Fern’s. I hope it won’t be too boring for her. I hope sometime soon she gets a good paying job.

Tuesday, September 4, 1984 ZACK A FRESHMAN AT LRHS, FIRST Day of School, Walt sick

A fair day. Zak entered the freshman class at LR High. 14 years. We went down to see him leave. He looked very nice. Walt sick this morning, he didn’t work. Kidney infection. Carmen down to sign up for work at the new place opening up on Portland Street. Fern is improving. Kim called. Also Carmen dropped in.
