The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 22 - 25, 1984 Carmen Moved Home

Wednesday, August 22, 1984

A very nice sunny day. Kim, Betty and I went to Portland to orthodontist for her last time. Also to the Dr. for cast for her feet to get them fitted for arch supports. We stopped at Carmen’s at Artel’s where she works and used Carmen’s car for the day. Zak and Milan sawed rest of the lumber. Jeff up tonight to go camping.

Thursday, August 23, 1984 Milan left at 7 AM

Made two pies and watched TV soaps. Billie to the doctor. He is doing quite well, there is a pulse in the left foot. His incisions are healing good. Zak to Dr. Shields at Lewiston. He is very good and won’t have to go back. A cloudy showery day, some sun. Bill Dunlop is missing at sea. I hope he will be found safe and sound. Milan called tonight, he got home at about 12 noon. First of the trip was very rainy.

Friday August 24, 1984

A partly cloudy and sunny day. I changed beds, done up the housework. Did a wash. Been busy all day, David called. Fern got quite upset again today. Carmen came at about 8 PM tonight. She will get her household goods moved back tomorrow.

Saturday, August 25, 1984 Carmen moved home today

A nice sunny day, not too hot. I done up my work. Carmen came for breakfast. Also Zak and Betty called. Today they moved Carmen’s things back to Bridgton. She went to see Fern. Fern is all shook up about Carmen getting another job.
