The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 26 - 28, 1984 Zak Away to Camp

Sunday, August 26, 1984

A beautiful day. I didn’t do much. Carmen called, also Dorothea and Kim. Kim worked up to Dorothea’s helping her get ready to sell her things she has left over from her antique shop. I finished reading my magazines.

Monday, August 27, 1984 Billie up to see about getting chickens moved, David’s hay, Zak away to camp for a week, Bill and Billie to doctors

This is been a very nice sunny day. I got up early, got Billie up early, he had to go to the doctors over to Fryeburg for the callous on his foot. They didn’t remove it because of his health. I went down to LRH with Betty to take Zak down. He went to a nature camp up to Bethel or Bryant pond. I’m glad for him. Carmen went to Central Maine Power to sign up for a job. I hope she gets it. Fern is sick and in bed most of the time. Bill to the Dr., he has got to get cleaned out and get prepared for another complete examination. He isn’t very good. Carmen is happy to be at home. We went up to Dorothea’s. Bill, Betty, Carmen and I then down to Casco and Otisfield to look at a house.

A very nice day, it got hot and muggy. I defrosted refrigerator, made two pies. Picked all the shell beans. Dorothea helped when she called and I worked on the beans. Billie, Betty and Carmen worked on the fence. Bill preparing to go to the doctors tomorrow for tests, x-rays etc. Betty and I called at Fern’s. Zak not being around seems funny. Fern not at all good. Kim and Tara came up this evening and they stayed all night. Got the hay all done at David’s.
