The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

They are having a birthday party for Jason. His is eight. Billie done a lot outside today. Fern not well today, she felt quite good when she got up. Sick when she went to bed.

Saturday, August 11, 1984 Joy came back to NCM hospital

A cloudy dreary day, hazy and humid. I done up the regular work, washed floors. Made rolls. Kim gave us brown bread. Very good. Milan in and out. Walt went and got Carmen. She moved up some things. She had a hard week going to work, walked and walked. Hard on her feet. Walt sick. David sick, Milan’s feet are bothering him. Fern sick again. Joy came to NCM hospital. Zak, Betty, Kim and Carmen called.

Sunday, August 12, 1984 A BIG BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

It was a quite nice day, not much humidity. It was on the cloudy side with some sunshine. I done up my work, in the first place, didn’t get up until 7:30 AM, then I defrosted the refrigerator because it was so iced up. Then I took a bath, we got ready and went to camp for a big birthday celebration for August 8. We had the most delicious turkey feed, salad, peas, beans, good bread, cukes. The rest was all chocolate. I had beautiful gifts, very nice with a lot of money. Dorothea, David, Milan, Walt, Betty, Carmen, Kim, Zak, Tara, Bill and Billie. Fern was missed very much, but she is much better today.
