The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 21 - 23, 1984

 

Monday, May 21, 1984 HOT

 

A very nice mild sunny day. I did my washing and ironing then I got lunch and then I went down to Betty’s and picked some dandelions. I took them in, Fern and I picked them over. I get them all wash. Fern was down to Betty’s all day because Dorothea went to LL beans with Milan and Betty. Betty cleaned her dining room and back porch. Milan and Betty was here for supper, we had dandelions, corned beef etc. Carmen called too. She seemed more relaxed. She is so upset about Betty. Kim called after supper. Zak up after school, he and Billie got rest of the manure out. Bill doing alright. To the doctor.

 

 

 

Tuesday, May 22, 1984

 

Another very nice day, hot. I was busy all day. I worked in the bathroom, got it all done except the ceiling. I went to town with Betty. Had salad for supper. In evening I called at Milan and Betty’s. They are staying at Fern’s house while they are here. Billie harrowed the gardens. They have dried out good. After Zak got home from school they hauled rest of manure. Bill is okay now. Dorothea called in PM.

 


 


 

Wednesday, May 23, 1984

 

I been doing some cleaning today. I made pudding and a custard. Billie up to Vermont with Butch today. We ate on the porch night. Kim came up after school.
