The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A quite nice day, on the cloudy side. I washed. Dorothea called. She and Betty down to Fern’s. She is about the same. Carmen waiting for Billie to come so they can go fencing. They got the fence posts up and now ready to string the wire. I finished doing the shell beans. Bill been in bed most of the day. Fern still not good. Kim checking on a job at the Loaf and Ladle.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 30, 1984

 

Dorothea having a sale for three days to get rid of her antiques and I hope she does. Betty gone to town for her today to do all the shopping. Carmen to the dentist. Kim over to Sharon’s to work babysitting. Dorothea did a good lot of business.

 

 

 

Friday, August 31, 1984 Bill $374 me $163, ZAK HOME from his week at camp

 

A kind of a cloudy showery day. I did the regular work. Carmen and I down town. Bill and Billie up to Dorothea’s off and on. This PM Betty and I down to LR high school to pick Zak up. He liked at, it was all different for him. No family, no farm chores to do. He found it interesting and fun for him. Betty and Carmen up to Dorothea’s. They bought some things. Billie mowed down to Walt’s. Kim working. Dorothea did another day of good business.

 

 

 

Saturday, September 1, 1984

 

A mostly nice day. No humidity which was good. We had a lot of heavy wind and some rain showers, nothing to amount to anything. A nice day on the whole. I done work up, made rolls, brownies, washed floors etc. Bill and I up to Dorothea’s again. She had Zak, he helped her a lot. She did another day of good business. Carmen to the wedding reception for Doreen McHatton. She and Lisa. She married Carrol Buck of Stoneham Maine.
