The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 1 - 3, 1968

Monday, January 1, 1968 Happy Anniversary Dorothea and Dave Wedding

Clear and windy. A very nice clear day, but on the very cold and windy side for the first day of the new year. Bill had to work all day. Billie and I took the bathroom tile tools to Norway. They belonged to Diamond National. The house where we took them is just being built. We went in and looked it over. A larger house than ours. No one here all day. Joy and Buddy and girls went home after a week at Bob’s. Betty and family are visiting with Walt’s family today.

This is been a very nice day. I did a big wash. Had to dry some in the house. I was glad to hear from Betty this morning. She had a very nice weekend. She met Walt’s family. They all glad to meet. In p.m. Dorothea, David and Jeff came. Had lunch. Dorothea did a big wash. They all stayed for supper. We was glad to have them. They had a good time up to David’s sister and family in Vermont and visit his grandmother. This has been a beautiful day. School began after a Christmas recess. Fern got to go to Portland to have her eyes tested, possibly an operation.

Wednesday, January 3, 1968

Cloudy and snowy this morning. In p.m. it began to storm hard. Bill had to go back to work after supper for about three hours. The stars are out late and it has cleared. I called Betty. She may come down and bring Carmen for a few days visit. Billie and I read papers and watched TV. Elvis Presley show, very good. Fern called, she and Lloyd got Social Security checks today. I went to town with Kennard this p.m.
