The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Jeff at his home

Sunday, December 31, 1967

Cloudy all day and it began to snow in late p.m. Jeff here this morning. Mike called and talked about the kids, he cried. He has that LOVE no matter what. Dorothea and Dave came and got Jeff, he didn’t want to go to Vermont with them. Billie and I called at Fern and Lloyd’s, Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis’s and Kennard and Dolores’s. Made a turkey pie for supper. Fern and Lloyd called. Bill to bed early, he may have to go out, it is snowing. I’m going to listen to the Guy Lombardo New Year’s show. Billie was with Chet and Lil for the new year.

This has been another year of happiness. First it was when Walter A Horton III came into Betty’s life and her two girls. It was soon after she met Walt that she discovered all the things she had been seeking. Respect, kindness and soon love creeping in for her and the two girls. Also during this past year Jeff was with his father for a month. Also we moved from a Dear Old Home to our Brand-new home which we all love very much. It is beautiful. We left home June 15, 1967. Dorothea and Betty both have new homes this year. Dorothea has been poorly in health all summer. But happy. This year has ended with a very nice Christmas of many nice gifts exchanged by all and a good happy family. Much to be thankful for, such as Kimberly’s better health and relief she has received by going in and out of the hospitals. She has made many improvements physically during first part of this year. We wasn’t at all sure of her outcome at beginning of year. She was sick. We hope 1968 will be a continuation of good progress which began in 1967. Two events was the weddings of Dorothea and Dave January 1 at one minute after midnight. On July 29 Betty and Walt. Both very pretty weddings and all.
