The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 3 - 9, 1959



Tuesday, November 3, 1959

Awful cold. I cleaned up downstairs, ironed. In evening Bill and I up to Hayd’s. I washed kitchen curtains. Pig went today.



Wednesday, November 4, 1959

I got paid today. I done up the work. Cleaned and scoured the separator. Billie and I called at Fern and Lloyd’s.



Thursday, November 5, 1959

I washed. In evening Fern and Lloyd came up. Lloyd cut the pig up. Betty to FHA meeting. This pig dressed 202 lbs.



Friday, November 6, 1959

I ironed, took care of the salt pork. The hams and bacon went today.



Saturday, November 7, 1959

Another rainy day. This is the third straight rainy weekend. I did regular work. Bill out hunting today.



Sunday, November 8, 1959

Partly cloudy. Raymond called. Fern, Lloyd and Ava Grover, Raymond and Ava here for supper. In evening, Billie and I over to Aunt Ava’s.



Monday, November 9, 1959

It cleared off today, it was a real nice day. I washed and churned. On the cool side. Bill away tonight. Betty babysitting. Billie gone away.
