The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 16 - 20, 1959



Friday, October 16, 1959

A very nice day. I washed. Betty had a big box come from Dorothea. It was clothes. Betty baby sitting tonight. She came up here with the children. Bill and I to town after supper. Paid bills, bought groceries, gas etc. Had the oil barrel filled today. Dolores down this p.m. to make plans for Fern’s party.



Saturday, October 17, 1959

Partly cloudy. I washed, ironed, and cooked. Dolores, Kennard called. Also Charles Virgin and Lloyd. Billie took me to town in p.m. He was so begrudging about it. Betty went too. Betty home all day. I had a chance to board two small children. Bill began putting the hot water radiators upstairs.

Done regular work. Bill still working on the piping upstairs. Kennie and Dot here. Got the heat upstairs, it is so nice.



Monday, October 19, 1959 COLD

A nice day. I washed, ironed, cleaned up the upstairs. It is so nice and warm up there. A very cold day.



Tuesday, October 20, 1959

Warmer today. I cleaned up the living room. Changed furniture. Cleaned the dining room. Betty got another letter from Mike. Dolores here and called twice today. Called Fern. She said Uncle Os is lame and is using crutches.
