The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 19 - 24, 1959



Wednesday, August 19, 1959 LETTER ADAIR

A nice day. Not too hot. I washed Betty’s sweaters and ironed them. I picked beans and cukes. Raymond called at noon. Bobby called in evening. In Dorothea’s letter she told all about the cute things little Jeffrey does. I wish he was here.



Thursday, August 20, 1959 Dennis Harvey Adair’s birthday

A very nice day. I cooked, cleaned up the chambers and over to garden. Betty, Dawn and three little girls called today. These girls are from Chicago, their mother is a friend of Dawn’s. Raymond called in evening. Also Bobby Smart.



 


 Friday, August 21, 1959

A very nice day. I washed and ironed a few things, done some cooking. Bill late getting home, went to town after supper. In evening Betty came home. Back up to Dawn’s. I went up for a short time.



Saturday, August 22, 1959

A very nice day. I cooked. Billie home early. He went to the auction at Maple Lane farm with Dennis. Betty here most of day, to town in p.m. Steve here in late p.m. Betty drove the car a little. Kennard called in evening.



Sunday, August 23, 1959

A very nice clear cool day. Sunny. Kennard, Betty, Billie, Steve, Lassie and I all went down to Raymond Maine to see the new WGAN TV tower. Quite a sight. Bob over to a steak supper.



Monday, August 24, 1959

Cloudy in a.m. and it began to rain about seven. Rained hard. Bill came home. Dawn drove Billie’s car and took Betty and I over to the Dr. Chesley Nelson at Norway. He checked Betty. She is in fair condition. Except a little low blood test. He gave her a prescription for some capsules for liver, appetite and vitamins. Fern and Lloyd here in evening.
