The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 29 - November 2, 1959



Thursday, October 29, 1959 Call from OHIO

Got a phone call from DOROTHEA. Also talked with Esther and Susan. It seemed so good to talk with them. Bill wasn’t here. She got to Esther’s today. Dennis and Freddie took she and Jeffie down. I washed and ironed today. Cleaned the plants up. Still did some more to take care of.



Friday, October 30, 1959 DENNIS left for ENGLAND

I done my cooking today. In late p.m. or after supper Bill and I went to town. Did the shopping. Betty home tonight.

 Denny left for England today. Do wish I could have seen him first. But I’m so glad he got to stay and visit his parents. Will be so glad when he gets back to the states and a chance to settle down in a nice home of their own.



Saturday, October 31, 1959

Another rainy day. I did up the work. Billie to town in p.m. Bill downtown in p.m. Kennard called. In evening Ken and Dolores and their Halloween mask called. Also Phonie, Sis and Wanda Jean. She is so cute. Bill put light down cellar. Betty made a delicious tasting tuna fish casserole for supper. Up to Dick and Irene’s to babysit all night.



Sunday, November 1, 1959

Partly cloudy, sunny in p.m. I didn’t do much today, just regular work. Betty up late. Billie dug ditch and Bobby. Bill over to Jim Chadbourne’s working. Billie over in p.m. Milan called today. He and a guy been to Bath Maine.



Monday, November 2, 1959

A nice day but cold. I washed and churned. Heavy snow squall in p.m. Blanche here in evening. She cut Mama’s hair, also Bill had his cut.
