The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 18 - 22, 1959 Jean Leaves For Scotland

Friday, September 18, 1959 Letter and snaps from Adair

A very nice day. I was busy all day. Went to town after Bill got home. In evening we went down to Jean’s and bid her goodbye. Another frost last night. Today we got some very cute snaps from Dorothea and Dennis of Jeff on his first birthday. Also good news, Jeff and Dorothea may come home for a visit while Dennis goes to new post to find a place for them to live. Hope Dennis gets a furlough before he goes overseas. Would like to have him come for a visit with his family.

Saturday, September 19, 1959

A very nice day. I wrote to Dorothea and sent her birth certificate for her to get her passport to go overseas with Dennis. Dolores called. Betty up to Blanche. Billie and I downtown in p.m. Aunt Ava called an afternoon. I cooked. Betty made a very good cake. Awful frost this morning.

Sunday, September 20, 1959 Dorothea and Dennis 2nd Wedding Anniversary

A beautiful day. We had a cookout. Fern and family and Bob and Blanche. Over to Aunt Ava’s in evening. Mary Cannell here all night. Mike’s birthday.

Monday, September 21, 1959

A very nice day. I washed. And churned. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis went to Yarmouth today for a two day visit. Billie is caring for their hens. The Fogg cow went this a.m. She was a nice kind loving and gentle cow. I hated to see her go. I liked her, she was so friendly.

Tuesday, September 22, 1959 Jean left for Scotland

Cloudy in a.m., cleared off late in day and was a beautiful day. Well, Jean left today for a visit in Scotland to visit her mother, brother and sisters, nieces and nephews. Jack, Sylvia, Judy, Gordon, Sally, Vicki and Linda took her to MontrĂ©al Canada to take the boat. I’m sorry Bill couldn’t go. He is quite disappointed. We will go at a later date though. I ironed. On the hot side. Kennie, Dot and Karen called in p.m. Also Raymond.
