The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 13 - 17, 1959



Sunday, September 13, 1959

A cold day. I done up the work. Bill mowed a lawn. Billie done some odds and end jobs. In evening over to Aunt Ava’s. Bill, Billie and I to set trap for her chicks. Billie took me over to Sam Pitt’s new tenting area at head of Crystal Lake, Harrison. Nancy Smart Dyer and baby girl called.



Monday, September 14, 1959

A nice day, colder than the dickens. I washed. And in p.m. went to the surprise going away party for Jean at her home. It was a nice party. She got a nice lot of gifts. Those present: Lizzie Wallace, Nellie  (?) Garlb, Erma Hill, Grace Richardson, Allie Morrison, Erna Adams, Edna Woodbury, Arma Kilborn, May Smith, Thena Allen, Phyllis Warren, Althea Crook (me). Hostess Kathleen Clark, Sally Weymouth, and Linda Weymouth. Bill over to Aunt Ava’s again tonight.



Tuesday, September 15, 1959

Rain all day. Nikita Khrushchev came to America from Russia. It was on television, the arrival of he and the members of his party. We watched it. Very interesting. Hope it will make a better understanding between the two countries. We will see. He is going to visit in other places in the US. In p.m. Bill came home, didn’t have to work. Dolores called. Kennie and Dot. Raymond also. Jean came up for supper. She enjoyed it all very much. Gordon called for her after supper.



Wednesday, September 16, 1959 1st FROST tonight

Today I ironed. After Bill got home we went to town and mailed a anniversary card to the Adair’s.



Thursday, September 17, 1959

Today a nice day but awful cold. Blanche came this p.m. She was here for supper. In evening Billie, Betty and I went down to Ferns. I cleaned up my chambers, also washed.
