The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 24 - 28, 1959

Tuesday, November 24, 1959 Dorothea and Jeff came

Cloudy and rained. Today Blanche, Fern, Betty and I went to the Portland airport to meet Dorothea and Jeffrey. They came from Esther and Cliff’s after a three-week visit with them. They both looked so good to us.

Wednesday, November 25, 1959 Dorothea and Jeffrey here

Rain and cleared late tonight. I cooked all day. It sure is good having Dorothea and Jeffie here. He is so cute all the time.

Thursday, November 26, 1959 Thanksgiving

We had Dorothea and Jeffrey here today for Thanksgiving. Dorothea got a call from Denny, has called Dorothea tonight from London England. She is so excited and pleased. He was so homesick. I heard his voice too. We had a nice dinner. Roast turkey, roast pork, onions, squash, peas, gravies, mashed potato, cranberry sauce, rolls, Graham nut bread, salad, celery, pies, brownies, coffee and tea. A nice clear day. Kennard, Delores and Aunt Ava here and Lloyd. Dr. Nash went down to his sons home for the day.

Friday, November 27, 1959

The day after the holiday got the house straightened out, things back to normal. Jeff has an awful cold. He is so cunning just the same. Fern and Lloyd up in p.m. Jeff was so cute.

Saturday, November 28, 1959

Cloudy and stormy. Bill worked all day. Billie, Dorothea and I went to town in p.m. Jeff is very cunning.
