The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 14 - 18, 1959



Friday, August 14, 1959 Got Glasses

A very nice pretty day. I cleaned up the downstairs, washed, went to town in late p.m. Got my glasses. Also I got a few clothes for school. Raymond over in evening. Billie to town. Hayd called after supper with the calf he got up to Ervins. Dawn, Betty back up here. Dawn, Betty and Georgette called here in p.m.

Monday, August 17, 1959

I washed and churned. Fern, Lloyd here in evening, also Bob. He had a picture of his granddaughter. She is cute. Fern and Lloyd brought me up a very pretty chair he painted for me. Yellow, very pretty. Billie over to Raymonds, he had a calf born over there this p.m. Today Sandy and Freddie Adair arrived at Dorothea and Dennis’s for a visit.



Tuesday, August 18, 1959

A very nice day. I ironed, made two apple pies. Bill and I called at Ferns in evening. Their breakfast set looks so nice. Fern went to a bridal shower up to Priscilla Rushmore’s. Kennard called. Raymond up to Vermont today.
