The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 3 - 7, 1959 Fire at (?) TOT Howard's Place



Thursday, September 3, 1959

A cloudy day, some rain showers. I cleaned up the upstairs. Betty and Dawn here in p.m., also Dolores. She is better. Kennie is out of work. Kennard called in evening.



Friday, September 4, 1959

A very nice day, cool and sunny. I cleaned up the downstairs, churned, washed some windows, worked all day. Off to town in late p.m. Dawn and her family left for New York for her brother’s wedding.








Saturday, September 5, 1959

A very nice day. I cooked, done up the work. Billie put up the fence in the field. Bill helped him string the wire after supper. Valmore Smart and family called in pm.



Sunday, September 6, 1959 Jeffrey 14 months today

A very nice day. Clear and cool. Billie fenced, Bill mowed lawns. I went for a ride with Fern, Lloyd and Mr. Yates. Mama went with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. About 11 o’clock a fire broke out at TOT (?) Howard’s place in North Bridgton. Billie took Raymond and me over.



Monday, September 7, 1959 LABOR DAY

A very nice day. I washed and the clothes got dry. I done up the work, washed kitchen and back porch floor. In p.m. I helped Billie do the fencing. Billie gone to the Lodge meeting tonight. He took Bobby and I over to North Bridgton to see where the fire was.
