The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 3 - 7, 1959 A Colt for Betty

A nice warm day. We washed. Jeff a lot better today and is so cunning.



Friday, December 4, 1959

A very nice day. Dorothea and Jeff been down to Howard Conant’s and over to Barbs and Phils. Dorothea had her hair done. Rose and two boys called. Dorothea and Jeff over to get their pictures taken for Dennis’s Christmas. Betty down to Irene’s, they went down to Zayres tonight shopping. I got some groceries over to Norway at the IGA store when I went to Norway with D.



Saturday, December 5, 1959

Betty came home from Irene’s. Dorothea, Jeff and I downtown shopping and called at Conant’s. Dorothea over to Barbs in p.m. and evening. I took care of Jeff. He is so cute all the time. So glad he is here.



Sunday, December 6, 1959 Jeffrey Dennis Adair 17 months today

Cloudy in a.m. Done up the work. Ken, Dot, Edith, Judy and Raymond called. Bill worked at Jim’s. THE COLT CAME. HE IS SO CUTE. BETTY IS HAPPY.



Monday, December 7, 1959

A very rainy forenoon. Cleared about noon. Dorothea, Jeff with Barb, Wesley and myself went to Portland to do Dorothea’s business about her passport over to Fort Williams. Got hers and Jeff’s shots. Went back to Gary Conant’s, got Tonie (?) and Wesley got home about 6 o’clock.
